The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has recently completed its runway recarpeting project. The activity was completed within a very short span of 75 days. This sets a new record among the brownfield runways in South Asia. This record-breaking work began on 14 January 2025 and very soon, the airport began to start with its flight operations. The 3.4 km long 60 m wide runway has been reconstructed and renovated to ensure better flight operations. All the flights have started operating on their regular schedule from 30th March 2025. The recarpeting work was carried out for 9 hours a day. This allowed the project to be completed without disrupting the aircraft operations to a significant level.
During the remaining 15 hours, the runways accommodated around 80 aircraft a day. This allowed the people to travel through the airport seamlessly even when the recarpeting operations were in progress. Around 50,000 metric tons of asphalt was used for the runway. Additionally, 1,50,000 m of duct pipe was installed. 5.5 lakh square metres of graded strip area was also upgraded as a part of the project. A total area of 2.40 lakh square metres was recarpeted. The project was completed with the cumulative effort of 500 employees and workers supported by over 200 pieces of state-of-the-art equipment.
